Glentunnel
St Andrew's on the Glen
Location
St Andrews of the Glen, Glentunnel, is a picturesque historic stone church. It is situated in the Glentunnel township, about 50 kilometres from Christchurch, on the Inland Scenic route (Highway 77). It is one of the few churches to have the NZ Air Force insignia in it stained glass memorial window.
The Church
The church seats about 60 people, and so is a lovely boutique wedding venue. Facing the street is an archway, the "Celebration Arch" - great for wedding photos! Nearby is the Glentunnel Community Hall. Built in the 2000's it has modern kitchen facilities and is ideal for wedding receptions.
St Paul & St Andrew
In 2012 Susan Wilson, an internationally renowned artist, gifted two paintings to the church. Susan was brought up in Coalgate, and her family includes two brothers who were well-known ministers in the Malvern area, The Revs Challice (Susan's father) and Lewis Wilson. The paintings depict St Paul and St Andrew, and reflect the style of a 17th Century Spanish painter, Francisco de Zurbaran, whose work has profoundly influenced Susan.
Glen Kirk Cafe
The "Glen Kirk" cafe operates on Sundays from noon to 4pm, and offers a good range of food and drinks. The church is open during these hours for rest and reflection. The cafe staff can also cater for morning or afternoon teas and light lunches by prior request. Contact Violet Baker Ph. 03-3182723.
